RESEARCH

Dr. Ramos has interests that encompass geochemistry, radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry, volcanology, ore genesis, and human and animal sciences. Interests include applying isotopes to address conventional and novel topics in the earth sciences and related fields. The Ramos group’s research evaluates the processes generating super-volcanic eruptions and how highly explosive magmas form and accumulate prior to such events. Volcanoes of interest include Valles caldera in New Mexico and Changbaishan volcano in North Korea/China. Additional interests target continental basalt volcanic fields in New Mexico including the Raton-Clayton, Malpais, and Carrizozo fields.  Students are also, evaluating the age and sources of ore deposits in Idaho and evaluating basaltic magma systems at the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Research incorporates and develops new techniques using Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), Multi-collector Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS), Secondary Ionization Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), and Laser Sampling and Single Crystal analyses.
